St Richard, Haywards Heath Feast of the Holy Guardian Angels 2 October 2024

What does today’s commemoration of the Holy Guardian Angels tell us about God and about ourselves? The presence of Angels around us is one expression of God’s rule over the world. Their presence is also recognition from God that his children are set in the midst of many trials and tribulations. He wants us to know that he’s on our side. The angels exist, scripture says, to show us this. God our Father, in his loving providence sends angels to watch over and defend us always by their protection so that one day we may share his divine life with them for ever.

Today the Western Church keeps the feast of the Holy Guardian Angels. It is a reminder of the watchful care of our heavenly companions.

Out of nothing and out of his sheer joy we believe God created all that is, seen and unseen

Christ spoke of the angels who always behold the face of my Father in heaven (Matthew 18v10).

The joyful praise of angels burst out at his birth.

Angels comforted the Lord in times of trouble.

Jesus implies that their unseen, comforting presence accompanies each one of his disciples.

From childhood to human maturity through to death each one of us is granted a Guardian Angel to guide and protect us.

This we take on trust from Our Lord himself in the Gospel.

The ministry of angels, though, runs right back through the Old Testament.

It runs forward as well since all that scripture promises about the completion of our salvation in Christ’s Return involves the Holy Angels.
